People's Democracy
People's Democracy is a political organisation founded on 9 October 1968 by students of Queens University in Belfast. It was formed after the attack of the RUC (Royal Ulster Constabularly) to the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association march in Derry on 5 October 1968.
On 9 October 1968 2000 students from Queens University Belfast tried to march to Belfast City Hall to protest against what happened and to call for the repeal of the Special Powers Act. The march was blocked by a counter demonstration led by Ian Paisley. Later in the evening the PD was formed by Bernadette Devlin, Cyril Toman and Michael Farrell.
It supported the campaign for civil rights for Northern Ireland's Catholic minority but it stated that such rights could only be achieved through the establishment of a socialist republic for all of Ireland.
People's Democracy entered the Northern Irish parliamentary election of March 1969.
It was heavily influential in northern politics from it's formation until around 1973 when it began to splinter into smaller groupings.

First Civil Rights March from Coalisland to Dungannon
On 24 August 1968 the Campaign for Social Justice (CSJ) and the NICRA (Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association) and several other groups held the first Civil Rights March from Coalisland to Dungannon, county Tyrone. Since the Government of Ireland Act 1920 Catholics in Northern Ireland had no rights. Northern Ireland was ruled by Unionist leaders. The Campaign for Social Justice was formed on 17 January 1964 in Dungannon. It's purpose was to bring light of publicity on the discrimination againts Catholics.
The Northern Ireland Civil Rights Association (NICRA) was an organisation which campaigned for civil rights for the Roman Catholic minority in Northern Ireland.
The Unionist Government on hearing of plans for the march issued restrictions which prevented the demonstators from entering Market Square in the centre of Dungannon. The reason was to prevent a clash with loyalists who had organised a counter-demonstration. When the civil rights demonstators arrive Dungannon, Gary Lennon served a notice from the RUC not to enter the Market Square.
The meeting was eventually held in Thomas Street while police separated both groups of demonstrators.
The publicity surrounding the march encouraged other protesting groups to form branches of NICRA.
